Overview of Brick

Brick is a township located in the vertical center of the state of New Jersey, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 46 miles south of the city of Newark. The township is actually a part of the New York metropolitan area, but in New Jersey's Ocean County. Brick was incorporated as a township in 1850, and this area saw rapid and substantial development near the end of the 1800s and into the beginning of the 1900s as the New Jersey Shore line grew in popularity. Brick saw another spurt of population growth in the 1950s from people relocating from big cities like New York City and Newark.

Census data indicated that nearly 41,000 Brick residents are in the local labor force. The most common industries are construction, healthcare and manufacturing.

Students have a number of higher education facilities available to them in the town of Brick as well as in nearby areas, including Georgian Court University and Ocean County College. Georgian Court University is located on a 156-acre campus in the nearby city of Lakewood, and it enrolls more than 1,700 students annually.

According to data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, Brick rentals have a vacancy rate of 5.3 percent, and median gross rent was valued at $1,135 as of 2010. The largest percentage of total renters fall in the gross rent range of $1,000 to $1,499, with 21.1 percent in the $750 to $999 range and an additional 27.1 percent spending $1,500 or more on gross rent. Nearly half of all renters report spending 35 percent or more of their household income on gross rental costs.

City-Data revealed that the estimated median household income in 2008 was $48,263.

There are numerous area attractions available to people living in Brick apartments. Notable Brick and nearby attractions include the Garden State Philharmonic, Havens Homestead, Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Barnegat Light State Park, Tuckerton Seaport and Six Flags Great Adventure.

At Barnegat Light State Park visitors can find one of the tallest lighthouses in the country.

Locals particularly enjoy spending some time in the sun at one of Brick's three beaches along the Barnegat Peninsula. Along the shore, people can enjoy a large variety of specialty shops, a number of exciting rides and restaurants, many of them featuring prime Italian cuisine. This is a particularly popular area for younger crowds in the hot summer months.
