Living in Chatham, N.J.

The area that is now Chatham was 160 feet below the surface of Lake Passaic 20,000 years ago. Years later, after the water dissipated, the land was inhabited by Lenni Lenape ("Original People") Indians and, in 1680, was founded by settlers. At the start of the Revolutionary War Chatham got its name, meaning "a village of cottages." During the war, the town often served as the buffer between the British and the patriotic armies. It later returned to being a peaceful town and thrived with the construction of the Morris and Essex Railroad and as a haven for city folk looking to escape their urban homes. Chatham was incorporated in 1897.

Today, Chatham maintains its historical roots. Its residential district reflects styles from the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the downtown is a quaint row of shops. The city's industrial area is on the edge of town. Chatham is very-family oriented and residents enjoy a well-run park system that offers tennis and basketball courts, a boat launch, picnic shelters and a community pool.

Chatham Attractions and Special Events

Every year, Chatham holds numerous events to celebrate its history. Residents look forward to the Fishing Derby at Kelly's Pond, the Fishawack Festival, the Fourth of July Parade and the Green Fair. During the summer and fall, they also take advantage of the Farmers Market at the Railroad Station that offers a variety of produce from the Garden State.

When residents want to travel farther from their apartment in Chatham, they can drive just 23 miles to New York City and take in all the Big Apple has to offer.
