The city of Clifton is located in northeastern New Jersey, approximately eight miles north of Newark and roughly 10 miles from New York City. It's situated in Passaic County, along the Passaic River. Clifton apartments for rent can easily be found across the 11.26 square miles of land and provide an excellent way to join the growing population of more than 84,000 people.
The city gets its name from a nearby cliff and is a relatively famous area due to its location in many scenes of the well-known television show "The Sopranos."
People living in Clifton apartments enjoy living in a community with a rich and interesting history. The city owes its development to the construction of the Morris Canal in 1824. The canal was planned to be utilized to transport cargo from the coast to many inland cities, yet the rise of railroads in the area provided easier transport and made the Morris Canal a financial failure. The canal did, however, provide prime opportunities to residents to enjoy canoeing, fishing and ice skating during the winter months.
The town was formerly known as Acquackanock, and Clifton was officially incorporated as a city in 1917. There are numerous reasons people consider Clifton to be a great place to live, including the community's rich diversity, its mix of small business and big-name stores, and many educational and recreational offerings. Residents particularly enjoy Clifton's position near the shoreline, mountains and rural areas, while having a thriving urban center with major sports venues, entertainment and numerous historical sites.
There are numerous attractions and special events available to residents and visitors. The Clifton Arts Center and Sculpture Park is a popular setting in the heart of the city dedicated to celebrating art in all its forms. The sculpture garden contains works of more than 30 contemporary sculptures.
The city hosts many special events throughout the year to bring the community together. These community events include comic book shows, flea markets, the annual Halloween parade and costume contest, community theater productions, and days committed to community health and wellness. The city even hosts Clifton candy-land in December, which provides holiday crafts, rides and games for children.
