Franklin Lakes was first inhabited by Lenape Indians in the 17th century. It attracted a Dutch population and Franklin Township was formed by the late 1700s . The Dutch settlers built farmhouses made out of sandstone and fieldstone, and several of those houses still stand today. In 1869, a railroad system helped further increase the population, and with the industrial revolution in the early 1900s, many mansions sprung up and were inhabited by "gentleman farmers."

In 1922, Franklin Lakes broke off from Franklin Township. In the 1990s, the completion of I-287 helped Franklin Lakes change its identity from a rural town to a metropolitan suburb of New York City, and CNN later named it one of the top earning towns.

The Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve is 120 acres and has a 25-foot high dam that was originally constructed in 1919. The preserve has been rated one of the best fishing spots in New Jersey and catches include largemouth bass, black crappie, pickerel, yellow perch and more.

Franklin Lakes is also within miles of many shopping centers and family attractions. Residents travel 15 miles or less to the Paramus Park Mall and the Westfield Garden State Plaza. They also can make family trips to the New Jersey Children's Museum, just 14 miles away.
