Living in Hawthorne, NJ

The area that is known today as Hawthorne was originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. In the early 1700s, Dutch immigrants arrived and settled in the area as farmers. The land was initially made part of the Manchester Township, which was eventually separated into Hawthorne, Haledon, North Haledon, Prospect Park, Totowa and the majority of the first ward of Paterson. Hawthorne was officially incorporated as a municipality on March 24, 1898, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.

In 1908, a house building program was initiated, which helped develop Hawthorne into the suburban community that residents enjoy today. According to the borough of Hawthorne website, in more than 110 years of its history, it only had 16 mayors.
