Living in Hightstown, NJ

Hightstown is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey. It was founded in 1971 by a couple who purchased 3,000 acres of land from the British Crown. True to New Jersey's "Garden State" motto, the city began as an agricultural hub. It stayed that way until railroad service reached the area, bringing manufacturing. Today little of the agricultural heritage exists, but the city has preserved some of its early buildings.

Hightstown is a tight-knit community, and local leaders use this to their advantage to promote growth. A group of volunteers run Downtown Hightstown, Inc., which seeks to improve the town's central area through community events and activities. The most common occupations are construction and administration and supply and waste service management. The town is within 20 miles of several higher education institutions, including Mercer County Community College, Princeton University and Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
