The township of Jackson was incorporated as a municipality in 1844 but its history dates back more than 330 years with the Monmouth Patent. The patent was a purchase of land from the Lenni Lenapes Indians by a dozen residents from nearby Long Island and Rhode Island. Settlers came into this area steadily from the 1800s to 1960s, when major home developments began springing up on existing farmlands and forests.
Apartments near Jackson are popular options for many people today, as the township is noted to be mainly a commuter community. However, the area does host roughly 12,000 housing units, due in large part to the rapid development in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. According to township historian David T. Miller Sr., an average of 750 new homes were built yearly during the '60s, with the '70s and '80s seeing an average of 1,000 new homes annually.

The township indicates that in recent years, the chief industries have been professional services, retail and manufacturing. The largest area business is the Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park and Wild Safari in the northwest corner of the township, employing roughly 200 full-time employees and between 5,000 and 6,000 seasonal employees.
