The Forest Hill Newark neighborhood is a historic neighborhood that was built before World War II. When the area was developed, a man named Elias Heller owned a file factory in the area. He helped build up the area, and many wealthy residents of the city decided to move into the area. As a result of the new wealth at the turn of the century, there are many stately Victorian homes in the area. Many of them have become historic landmarks, and other homes have been sold off to private owners. When you want to live just off the Passaic River, you can move into the northern portion of Newark.
The Forest Hill Newark neighborhood stretches from the sublime historic homes to the outer reaches where apartment buildings rest. The cheaper apartments in the community rent for as little as $600 a month, but the nicest apartments rent for up to $1500 a month depending on their location. The older apartment buildings in the community do not have the fancy amenities that modern renters are used to, but the newest complexes rent units that come with many different amenities and options. There are also many rental homes in the area. Some have been split into duplexes, and other rental homes are being sublet by their owners.
This pre-World War II community is littered with old establishments that have stood the test of time, but the modern franchises and stores we are all accustomed to have moved into the area, as well. You can find a local bar or restaurant that you prefer, but you can just as easily eat at a chain restaurant that you are familiar with. The beauty of these old neighborhoods is that they hold on to a part of the past.
This old community is somewhat pet friendly, but there are not as many sidewalks as you might like. The older businesses in the community may not allow animals in their buildings, and there are other businesses that only allow guide animals. You must make sure you have checked with the buildings you want to rent in. Some complexes allow pets, but others will not.
The commute in the Forest Hill Newark area is simplified by public transportation. The bus and train system can take you into the city, and the system will take you all the way to Manhattan if you like. Also, there are many taxis in the area that you can take to work if you prefer. Many people do not drive their cars due to congestion, and you can change your lifestyle by using other forms of transportation. This is one corner of America where there is enough public transportation for everyone.
The community is served by Newark City Schools, but Newark City Schools has had more than its fair share of problems with financing and staffing. There have been countless news stories about money that was donated to the school system that went to waste. You may find a local school that you prefer, but the Newark/New York area is filled with parochial schools that your children can attend. You need to carefully weigh the education options for your children before you enroll.
