You can find a neighborhood that appeals to you and rent near Philadelphia while still enjoying the benefits of a smaller town.
Living in Woodbury
Native Americans lived in New Jersey for centuries before a Quaker settler built a home and named the settlement Woodbury after his own last name. Though founded in the 17th century, it wasn't officially incorporated into a city until 1854. The town thrived due to its proximity to Philadelphia and for the employment opportunities it offered its residents.
In more modern years, the city gained fame after working with the town of Bury in England. The two towns worked together and hosted a number of celebrations and historical reenactments for its residents. The city's current population is just over 10,000 people.
There are a number of things that apartment renters and homeowners can do both in the city and in the surrounding area. The Mutter Museum, which is around 20 minutes away in Philadelphia, has one of the world's largest collections of unusual medical and death memorabilia. Thousands of people flock to the museum for the odd exhibits and unusual displays.
Also in Philadelphia is Reading Terminal Market. You can spend hours walking around and sampling foods from different local farms and sellers without seeing and experiencing everything it has to offer. Bring home a few unusual or regional ingredients for use in your home kitchen.
If you want to remain a little closer to home, stop by the Gloucester County Historic Society Museum. Located in Woodbury, the museum is only open for a few hours several times a week, but those working at the museum will give you an in-depth history of the area and tell you more about the artifacts on display. Though the Red Bank Battlefield and Whitall House National Park is a short drive from the city, it gives you the chance to explore the Civil War battlefield for yourself.
When you're in the mood for live entertainment, consider checking out the West End Schoolhouse, which is home to the Sketch Club Players. The playhouse offers a number of performances every year.
The New Jersey Transit has four stops in the city that offer locals a way to get to Philadelphia quickly. As the buses only stop a few times a day and delays are possible, you might find that owning a car is a better option.
