Binghampton is located in the south-central region of New York, a short drive south of Syracuse. The city has several nicknames, including "The Parlor City" and "Carousel Capital of the World." Situated at the convergence of the Chenango River and the Susquehanna River, Binghampton provides its residents with a charmed, relaxed living experience. This is a city that retains its small town charms but still offers the conveniences and work opportunities of a larger city, making it a desirable place to call home.
When Binghampton was incorporated as a town in 1867, it was already home to numerous affluent families, and the large, stately homes of these wealthy individuals gave way to the evolution of the town's nickname "The Parlor City." Its unique location on two rivers made it an ideal location for manufacturing activities, an economic activity that continues to flourish today.
Early manufacturing in the area included cigars and shoes. This has evolved over the years, and today's manufacturing activities are largely based on electronics and defense products. Notably, IBM was founded just outside of this mid-sized town. Because of the many work opportunities in the area over its history, the area has become known as the Valley of Opportunity.
While the city is home to approximately 50,000 residents, apartment renters are often drawn to the small neighborhood communities throughout the area due to their quiet ambiance and conveniences. Those who want to enjoy fabulous work or educational opportunities in a lovely area in lower New York State will fall in love with all that this town has to offer.
If you choose to rent a space in a local neighborhood, you may love being close to many attractions in the local area. For example, the famous Ross Park Zoo carousel is a delight for families, and the zoo is home to many fabulous natural exhibits. Many local apartment renters, homeowners and even visitors from across region delight in special annual events like the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, which is held each summer. Whether you are a spectator or a participant in the rally, this is a gorgeous and fun-filled event that is memorable for all ages.
Traveling from your neighborhood or apartment for rent in the area is easy to do. Interstate 81 spans across much of the city, which provides auto drivers with a fast and easy way to commute to work and to other areas. Numerous other major highways also add to the convenience of getting around town in a car. Apartment renters and others may also enjoy use of the public transportation system, which is operated by B.C. Transit. Some of the universities and colleges have their own private transportation systems on campus. In addition, the Greater Binghampton Airport is a regional airport that makes it easy for you to travel to locations farther away.
If you are interested in working toward a higher education degree while living in an apartment for rent in the community, you will have several school to choose from. Binghampton University, State University of New York Upstate Medical University, Ridley-Lowell Business & Technical Institute and Empire State College all have campuses in the community. You can find many lovely housing options for rent close to each of these campuses.
The area has a robust economy that is largest focused on manufacturing and education. Because of this, some of the largest employers in the area include Binghampton University, IBM, Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems. There are numerous rental options close to these and other employers.
