Overview of Bohemia

As one of few remaining hamlets in the U.S., Bohemia, New York, has rare charm and allure. Located on the South Shore of Long Island, Bohemia retains the diverse, free-spirited feel of its original settlers. With ample employment opportunities, a colorful history and white sand beaches nearby, this little-known spot has much to recommend it to apartment renters. In addition, it's only 30 miles from New York City. For those who love beaches and bustle, rich history and modern living, Bohemia is the ideal place to rent.

Living in Bohemia

The region was originally home to several native Algonquin tribes. In the 1850s, Slavic immigrants fled autocratic rule in former Czechoslovakia. Since New York City was inundated with job seekers looking for opportunities in America, the newcomers gradually moved eastward from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Many fell back on their old country folk music and became street musicians. Their traditional Czech culture still enriches Bohemia today.

Bohemia's 10,900 residents are seldom at a loss for things to do. Aside from the short trip from their apartments to one of the greatest cities in the world, townspeople appreciate the cross gable-roofed homes on their own shady avenues. Car trips along the shore show the Long Island in all its glory.

Catch the Sayville Ferry, and you're on your way to the Fire Island National Seashore and some of the most spectacular beaches in the country. Connetquot River and Heckscher State Park provide acres of recreational opportunities including swimming, kayaking, picnicking and horseback riding, which make for all-day outdoor adventures. Fishing equipment and bikes are for rent. The park offers sanctuary to diverse wildlife, and most neighborhoods along the borders feature horse stables.

History buffs who rent in the area should check out the Bohemia Historical Society. Dedicated to preserving ethnic heritage, its collection of books, photographs and historical Czech manuscripts recall the lives of early settlers.

If you're curious about the lavish excess of the Jazz Age, check out the Marshall Field III Estate on Long Island Sound. The publisher, banker and racehorse owner built the house in 1925. It's one of the largest of the famous Gold Coast Mansions and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Long Island Railroad, with stops in convenient proximity to your apartment, makes it easy for you to reach destinations all along Long Island or in the Big Apple. The train provides amenities for a comfortable commute, such as tray tables for computer work or card games. For shorter trips in and around your own neighborhood, the Suffolk County public bus system will get you where you need to go.

Those who rent here can even avoid the busier air travel hubs like LaGuardia and JFK. MacArthur Airport is right in the neighborhood.
