The name, "Haverstraw" comes from the Dutch language and means oat straw. The town name was first recorded on a map in 1616 and is an appropriate title given the straw that lines the town's river meadows. Home to approximately 12,000 people, Haverstraw embodies a small-town atmosphere yet is still conveniently located only an hour's drive north of New York. Haverstraw is set in the valley near and the Hudson river. Known as the brick making capital of the world from 1750 to the 1930s, Haverstraw is the city that made the bricks to build New York City. Today, Haverstraw embodies is known for its affordable luxury lifestyle. New house and apartment construction projects have commenced recently, indicating the growth in the area.
During the American Revolution, Haverstraw served as an important lookout for British activities on the Hudson river. The town of Haverstraw was once the main industrial site for the production of brick in the Northeastern United States. Today the Garnerville Holding Company rents space to businesses, artists and craftsmen in the city. These old buildings are one of the few examples of 19th century factory architecture still in use throughout the nation.
Haverstraw village provides residents easy access to the Metro-North rail system via New York Waterway ferry that transports travellers across the widest part of the Hudson River, making it easy for residents to get into the heart of New York City.
Aside from the city's historical value, Rockland County continues to search for ways to better serve the community. To help offset local property taxes, Rockland County is working diligently to promote new development. The city of Haverstraw offers a diverse pool of jobs including medicine, business marketing and service companies. A reasonable commute by ferry allows residents the option to work in a big city while living in a small town.
Other attractions for local residents include the many parks. Bowline Point Park, located on the river, has a large pool, a tennis court, multiple volleyball courts, walking paths and picnic areas. Mount Ivy Park caters to baseball and softball players, joggers and fishermen.
Of course, if residents are looking for world-class dining or entertainment, the bright lights of the Big Apple are only a short ferry ride away.
