Overview of Haverstraw

The name, "Haverstraw" comes from the Dutch language and means oat straw. The town name was first recorded on a map in 1616 and is an appropriate title given the straw that lines the town's river meadows. Home to approximately 12,000 people, Haverstraw embodies a small-town atmosphere yet is still conveniently located only an hour's drive north of New York.   Haverstraw is set in the valley near and the Hudson river. Known as the brick making capital of the world from 1750 to the 1930s, Haverstraw is the city that made the bricks to build New York City.
