Governor Tryon's troops blazed the trail to Clayton in 1770 on the march from New Bern to Hillsborough to fight the Regulators. Stallings' Station was built as a depot on the North Carolina Railroad, leading to the incorporation of the town in 1869. The city was known as a major contributor to the cotton, watermelon, and tobacco industries well into the 20th century. Cotton helped sustain the local economy during the Great Depression until an industrial base took over in the 1970s.
