Billing itself as "Freedom's Base Camp," Spring Lake is a small town located near the central part of North Carolina. Best known for the state park located within the city, it's a quiet little town like those you might see in old films or on old television shows. Main Street, which runs through the center of town, is home to a number of restaurants and shops owned by locals. While you can find an apartment for rent in nearly any town in North Carolina, living in a small neighborhood like this one is a great choice for those that like the small town feel.
Arthur Purdy was a local man who took note of the local railroads and realized that those traveling via train might need some supplies. Purdy opened a small shop that served the needs of those travelers. The area surrounding Silver Lake went through several name changes over the years, and the town once named itself for a local sawmill owner. After becoming a city in 1951, the town adopted its current name.
Much of the population expansion experienced by the town came from the formation of Fort Bragg. As the size of the base grew, those working there needed to find homes and places to live. The town now has a population of 13,217 people.
If you're an apartment renter looking for excitement and adventure, plan a trip to Carvers Creek State Park. This state park offers plenty of activities to keep you entertained. You can spend days wandering along the hiking trails without seeing all of the park, and if you have a fishing license, you can enjoy fishing at the park. People of all ages can take part in environmental education programs to learn more about keeping the park and the surrounding towns safe. The park also offers tours of the historic Rockefeller home that is part of the park.
History buffs will also want to spend some time at the Long Valley Farm. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it's one of the oldest homes and farms in the Spring Lake region.
Don't forget about the Triangle Rock Club either. Originally part of a gym, the owners noticed that the rock-climbing wall was popular with some guests and decided to spinoff that wall. Visitors can now have fun checking out each of the walls and trying to reach the top. If you want to host a special event, you can even pay to use the club exclusively with your group.
As this community is so small, your best option for getting around town is your own car. You can hop in your car and take the rural back roads to see some of the historic sites nearby, or you can take your car to Fayetteville and other neighboring towns.
The larger town of Fayetteville is just 10 miles away from the center of Silver Lake. Many of those students looking for a neighborhood place to rent in the smaller town do so because they attend school at one of the colleges in Fayetteville. Those campuses include Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville State University and Miller-Mote College.
With its convenient location near Fort Bragg, it's not surprising that this military base is the largest employer in the area. Many of the men and women working on the base rent an apartment in a neighborhood in the city. Other major employers include Cumberland County Schools, Fayetteville Technical Community College and Cape Fear Valley Health System.
