Overview of Berea
Conveniently located just 12 miles south of Cleveland near Hopkins International Airport, the town of Berea is one of Ohio's finest communities. Situated near several major highways - including the Ohio Turnpike - and close to big-city amenities, many people enjoy the small-town atmosphere that the area has to offer, making Berea apartments for rent a hot commodity for many northeastern Ohio residents. According to information from City-Data, the city has seen a recent bump in population, mainly because of the town's low cost of living, low crime and affordable rent.
Living in Berea, OH
Oddly enough, Berea got its name from the flip of a coin. The Rev. Henry Sheldon, one of the first settlers in the area, was torn between the biblical cities of Berea and Tabor for the community's namesake, so he allowed its postmaster to call "heads," and the city's name hasn't changed since.
Like many small towns in northeast Ohio, Berea emerged as a manufacturing community during the 1800s, becoming well-known throughout the United States for its sandstone production and quarries. Today, Berea keeps up with its historic blue-collar past, but continues to evolve and change with the same hardworking spirit of its founding fathers. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Berea has grown over the years into a community of about 19,000 residents.
Berea Attractions and Special Events
There are many places that Berea residents take pride in, including the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, home to Berea's National Rib Cook Off, Country Music Jamboree, Irish Festival and other community events.
Berea is also home to the Cleveland Browns training facility, and it is also a popular place for northeastern Ohio's favorite NFL players to call home. Residents here enjoy watching their best athletes train for pre-season games here every July and August.
