Located in the bustling atmosphere of northeastern Ohio, Canton is known to have all the charm and perks of a small city with the amenities of a large metropolis like Cleveland only a short drive away. Home to a thriving arts scene and five area universities and the birthplace of American professional football, many Ohioans are drawn to Canton apartments for rent for plenty of good reasons. According to information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2011 population estimate was around 72,900, making it one of the largest communities in northeast Ohio.
Canton was founded in 1805 due to its ideal location near the west and middle branches of the Nimishillen Creek. After years of development, it was officially incorporated in 1822 as a village and later as a city in 1838. The city got its name after Canton, China, as a memorial to a local trader named John O'Donnell, whom the city's first surveyor Bezaleel Wells admired. O'Donnell named his Maryland plantation after the Chinese city and was one of the first people to transport goods from there. The city later became known as a manufacturing hub due to its close proximity to many railroad lines. After a decline in production, Canton has reinvented itself and diversified its economy.
Every year, sports fans from across the country turn their eyes to Canton when a new class of honorees are inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, located downtown. A mainstay in the community since 1963, the hall has seen millions of visitors, hosted a nationally televised football game and celebrated weeklong enshrinement festivals for visitors and residents alike.
One of the places in Canton that exudes a strong sense of community pride is the McKinley National Monument. The final resting place of President William McKinley and his wife, Ida, this beautiful marble-domed structure overlooks the scenic parkland that lie just outside of the downtown area.
