Listen to Columbus

Columbus has a vibrant performing arts scene with a rich history. In the Downtown area, the exquisitely restored Ohio Theatre was originally built in 1928. Now a National Historic Landmark, the Theatre hosts over 100 shows on its stage per year, including the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet and Broadway Across America.

Two blocks south of the Ohio Theatre is the Southern Theatre. It is the oldest surviving venue of this type in central Ohio as well as one of the oldest in the state - first opened in 1896. Like the Ohio Theater, it's owned and operated by the Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. The space hosts concerts from its owner, the non-profit entertainment presentation group CAPA?, as well as concerts by the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Chamber Music Columbus and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.

Although Columbus can experience the notoriously chilly temperatures of the Midwest in the winter, the warm summers are perfect for performances by a variety of artists during the city's Rhythm on the River concert series. Rhythm on the River at Bicentennial Park Performing Arts Pavilion, features a range of performances, from bluegrass to ballet right next to the Scioto Mile Fountain. This free riverside event is great for the whole family, and a popular community event.

Check out the other art throughout Downtown Columbus

Other theaters near townhouse rentals in Columbus are more focused on dance and drama, rather than music. On the other side of Downtown, performing arts venues include the King Arts Complex. This performing arts space focuses on the heritage and artistic achievements of African Americans. It has dance studios, a ballroom, a 444-seat theater, classrooms, a gallery and offers a variety of performances and educational programs throughout the year.

Also Downtown, right off Route 40, the Columbus Museum of Art give residents a great place to explore classic pieces of artwork and associate with community members who share an artistic passion. With a strong collection of turn-of-the?-century American and European modern art, the Museum is open to creative works. The museum shows off the permanent collection while also collecting large photographic collections and developing community creativity with groups like CAPA, The Ohio State University, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium as well as several other organizations.

The Ohio State University also has the Wexner Center for the Arts just to the north. This contemporary art institution, started in 1989, combines traditional art media with video, audio and performance art for an eclectic collection from students and professionals.
