Delphos was established out of four towns, founded by settlers who were attracted to the area because of work being done on the Miami and Erie Canal. The first settlement was between 1836 and 1842, and pioneers from Germany settled between 1832 and 1846. The towns merged into Delphos in 1851, and it grew into a manufacturing hub thanks to the canal and, later, the Lincoln Highway.
