In 1888, the city had two newspapers, six churches, three banks and numerous manufacturing businesses.

In 1893, the New York Central Railroad was constructed right through the community. Residents were concerned that it was being built through the area's cemetery, where many war victims were buried. In April 1879, the village purchased a piece of land spanning 39.5 acres located where Raymond Road and West Fifth Street, which increase the size of the town..

Today, the history lives on throughout the community. The Union County Historical Society has historical markers throughout the city to commemorate and honor important individuals.
