Two years after Ohio was admitted into the Union, the first settlers arrived along the western bank of Chagrin River. In 1925, Mayfield Heights was incorporated as a village with a population of 1,500. By 1952, it was incorporated as a city, and in the 1960s construction of recreation facilities increased. In 1994, the first female mayor was elected and Margaret Egensperger served the city for three consecutive terms.
