Perrysburg is a historical community located on the banks of the Maumee River. The city streets are lined with older Victorian buildings, and home to interesting shops and boutiques that fuel the downtown area. Local residents are surrounded by historical sites and the best of modern conveniences in the Levis Commons town center, allowing them to experience the best of both worlds. In 1810, Amos Spafford brought the first settlers to the Perrysburg area by way of Lake Erie. The city's first name was Miami of Lake Erie. Fort Meigs was built during the War of 1812 and still stands as one of the city's most notable attractions. Fort Meigs was attacked twice during the war but was never conquered by British forces. When the war ended in 1815, former inhabitants of Port Miami moved back into the area. Around this time the city was renamed to commemorate Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who led a successful attack over the larger British fleet during the Battle of Lake Erie.
Perrysburg experienced a population boom after a bridge was built across the Maumee River, allowing for easier travel and trade with nearby Toledo. Laborers drained the Black Swamp, creating new farm land to support the needs to the thriving town. Today, Perrysburg is a family-friendly city with one of the most progressive mindsets in Ohio. Rent a Perrysburg apartment, and find a unique blend of deep-rooted history.
