Henry Lawton was the quartermaster at Fort Sill and is well-known for capturing Apache leader Geronimo and placing him in jail. Lawton city was named to pay tribute to Henry Lawton.

Today Lawton takes pride in its green community efforts and the artistic endeavors of its residents. As the county seat of Comanche County, Lawton thrives as a governmental center for the area.
