Conveniently located along Interstate 85 in between Greenville and Spartanburg, the city of Greer is one of the fastest-growing communities in the state of South Carolina. With an excellent location and beautiful scenery, many residents are taking a second look at Keene apartments for rent because of the city's easy accessibility for families. After a recent spike in residents, the 2011 estimated population was more than 26,000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. With more than a quarter of the city younger than 18, it is no surprise that many families call Greer home.
Long before South Carolina became a colony, Cherokee Native Americans were drawn to the area because of the abundant rivers and creeks that were ideal for fishing and hunting. After making treaties with European settlers in 1777, the site of Greer was originally named Old Bailey Place and began to grow. It wasn't until the late 1800s that the city officially changed its name to Greer. Once the railroad made its way south, Greer became an attractive site for commerce. With many textile mills and agricultural products, the city grew into a small manufacturing hub.
In the modern era, Greer has experienced economic and residential development due to the Greenville-Spartanburg airport, a local BMW plant, and close proximity to Interstate 85.
Two relics from the 19th century are located in Greer. Built in 1909, Campbell's Covered Bridge crosses Beaverdam Creek and after several restorations is the last covered bridge left standing in the state. Open to pedestrian traffic, it is close to nearby Gilreath's Mill, one of the few remaining buildings that showcase the state's rural background. Part of the National Register of Historic Places, these relics show the city's past and point to Greer's bright future.
