Living in Columbia, TN

When Maury County was formed in 1807, the city of Columbia was formed in an area taken from the territories of the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, and Chickasaw tribes. When the city's charter was amended in 1850, Columbia hired its first police officer and paved the way into modern society.

Today, Columbia is a quaint city surrounded by rolling hillsides that keep residents connected to the great outdoors. Columbia is home to the Maury Regional Medical Center, which provides exceptional medical care and job opportunities for the local community. The city also has a great public school system, uncommonly friendly residents, and a comforting, hometown atmosphere that makes Columbia the perfect place to raise a family.

Columbia Attractions and Special Events

As the childhood home of President James K. Polk, one of Columbia's main attractions is its Historic Homes Tour. Visitors can sign up for a tour through the city's historic properties, including the Hampton-Preston Mansion, the Mann-Simons Site, the Robert Mills House and Gardens, and the Woodrow Wilson Family Home. Columbia hosts an annual Mule Day, which is a celebration of the local favorite animal. Mule Day has evolved since it began in 1840 and is now a week-long celebration that draws thousands of visitors to partake in best of breed events, horse shows, a flea market, barbecue specialties, traditional festival fare, and the Mule Day Parade. The Southern Fried Festival also takes place here. The two-day celebration of fried food includes a cooking contest, parade, 5K run, art vendors, live music, and a scarecrow contest.
