Gallatin is located in the heart of the United States, just 25 miles north of the exciting city of Nashville. With housing options ranging from townhome communities to downtown apartments to luxury estates, Gallatin has something to offer to all of its diverse residents. The city honors its deep history while planning big ideas for the future, giving Gallatin the distinction of "A City on the Move." Look for Gallatin apartments for rent, and join more than 30,000 people who focus on the big picture in this wonderful city.
Gallatin was named after Albert Gallatin, the Secretary of Treasury to presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The first building was founded by Andrew Jackson in 1803 and the town was officially incorporated in 1815. Gallatin was the site of political contention at the beginning of the Civil War when most citizens were opposed to seceding from the Union but eventually placed their support behind the Confederacy. The city was an important location during the war because of its proximity to the railroad and Cumberland River, both crucial transportation routes for both forces.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Gallatin experienced steady growth, although the area maintained an economy largely dominated by agriculture. In 1970, industrialization led nearby Hendersonville to surpass Gallatin as the largest city in Sumner County, but Gallatin still holds the distinction as the county seat. Today, Gallatin is one of Nashville's most thriving suburbs, as local residents work to increase local opportunities for work and study.
Gallatin is home to Volunteer State Community College, a two-year institution serving twelve counties in northern Tennessee. The school is a member of the Tennessee Transfer Pathways program, which guarantees that credits received at VSCC will be accepted as transfer credits toward bachelor's degrees at all public universities in Tennessee. Volunteer State Community College is a great starting point for local students, and joins other educational opportunities located 28 miles away in Nashville.
For those seeking work, Gallatin is home to a wealth of opportunities across many different industries. A number of large companies are headquartered here, including ServPro Industries, Nationwide Studios, Samick Music Corporation. Sumner Regional Medical Center and Volunteer State Community College employ the largest percentage of people in town, showing the importance the city places on public services for local residents. Sixteen percent of residents work in the education, health and social services industries. Other top employers include Gap Inc, the City of Gallatin, ABC Group Fuel Systems, R.R. Donnelley & Sons and ABC Technologies/Salga Plastics. These companies, among many others, provide jobs for the 47 percent of Gallatin residents who hold management, sales and office positions.
The city of Gallatin boasts very reasonable rent prices, which, along with the highly desirable lifestyle found in the Mid South, bring many new residents to the area each year. United States Census Bureau statistics show that the standard apartment in Gallatin costs $737 a month, which is $120 less than the national average. Everyday living expenses are also affordable in Gallatin. The city received a cost of living index of 88.8, which is well below the United States average of 100.
Gallatin hosts events throughout the year that encourage participation from residents and visitors alike. The Taste of Gallatin event showcases the delectable flavors of more than 20 local restaurants, caterers, groceries and other related businesses. Winners are selected in the business exhibition, food exhibition, appetizer, side dish, dessert, entrée and beverage categories and hold the title for the entire year. The city also hosts an annual Gallatin Christmas Parade and annual Golf Tournament that have become favorite local events that residents look forward to.
