Though it is sometimes known as a fly-over state, Tennessee has some beautiful countryside worth visiting, and the unincorporated community of Hixson is no exception. Lying north of the Chattanooga neighborhood of Rivermont, Hixson is surrounded by natural attractions such as Hamilton Memorial Gardens, the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy, Dupont Park and the TVA Big Ridge Small Wild Area. It is a stone's throw from the Chattanooga River and Chickamauga Lake.
Apartment renters here are close to the big city comforts of Chattanooga while enjoying lush green tranquility near home. The community has its own mall, which attracts visitors from nearby Chattanooga. It is an idyllic environment for people who rent apartments.
The Hixson family has been a prominent presence in the history of the community since the 1820s. The first two stores were started by members of the family as were the first blacksmith shop and post office. Today, over 40,000 people live in this community.
The exact number of people who live here is difficult to pin down. According to Sperling's Best Places, there were slightly more than 40,000 people as of the 2010 census. City-Data, on the other hand, shows a population of only 15,033 and a population density of 1,423 per square mile. As of 2011, the median local rent was $588, slightly higher than the median rent in Tennessee as a whole at $547.
There are many entertainment options in Hixson. Apart from Northgate Mall, which boasts a 14-screen movie theater, apartment renters can enjoy outdoor pursuits at The Greenway Farm, offering hiking, sports, canoeing and a dog park.
Hixson falls within the remit of the Chattanooga Area Rapid Transport Authority (CARTA), which has introduced its own transit app. CARTA offers a bus service, Care-A-Van for people who are unable to use the fixed route transit service, an electric shuttle service in downtown Chattanooga and the Incline Railway. The latter is more of a tourist attraction than a transportation service since the railway climbs historic Lookout Mountain on "America's Most Amazing Mile." The MOCS is a free shuttle serving the University of Tennessee and the local area. Information about CARTA's 16 bus routes is available by telephone.
For apartment renters with schoolchildren, there are five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. High school graduates have a choice of three local colleges: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Chattanooga State Community College and Miller-Motte Technical College, also in Chattanooga.
Apartment renters looking for work will find the major employers in nearby Chattanooga, the top three of which provide a living for somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,000 people each. These are the Hamilton County Department of Education for elementary and secondary schools, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee and the Tennessee Valley Authority. For those who like working closer to their own neighborhood, local employers include the mall and the local lumberyards.
