Lying north of the Chattanooga neighborhood of Rivermont, Hixson is surrounded by natural attractions such as Hamilton Memorial Gardens, the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy, Dupont Park and the TVA Big Ridge Small Wild Area. It is a stone's throw from the Chattanooga River and Chickamauga Lake.

Hixson falls within the remit of the Chattanooga Area Rapid Transport Authority (CARTA), which has introduced its own transit app. CARTA offers a bus service, Care-A-Van for people who are unable to use the fixed route transit service, an electric shuttle service in downtown Chattanooga and the Incline Railway. The latter is more of a tourist attraction than a transportation service since the railway climbs historic Lookout Mountain on "America's Most Amazing Mile." The MOCS is a free shuttle serving the University of Tennessee and the local area. Information about CARTA's 16 bus routes is available by telephone.
