Johnson City is home to East Tennessee State University, which enrolls about 11,600 students each year. A few trade and medical schools are also located in the area, including the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, Emmanuel School of Religion and Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology and Aesthetics.
Johnson City is part of the Tri-Cities of Tennessee, which includes Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol. The three cities represent a thriving economic area, and many residents commute between cities for work.
