The historic town of Smyrna was founded in the central region of the state within Rutherford County. Stewarts Creek and the Stones River meander through the community to the nearby Percy Priest Lake, which enhances the beauty of the area and adds to the number of outdoor activities available here. The suburb is a mere 24 miles northwest of the famous city of Nashville. Finding an apartment for rent in a local neighborhood provides you with the chance to enjoy the charming, laid-back advantages of a small town while offering the possibility of big-city amenities nearby.
European pioneers arrived during the early 1800s and established farms and plantations. Being located between Chattanooga and Nashville, the community served as a vital refueling station along the rail link during the Civil War era. Local landowner Sam Davis became a state hero during the time, and his plantation is now a heritage site that offers tours. Prior to WWII, the Stewart Air Force Base constructed an installation here and became a major employer. The facility closed in the 1980s. However, world-renowned industries favored the town and established companies here. Today, Smyrna has a population of around 33,000 people.
Whether enjoying morning jogs, picnics or games of basketball, tennis and volleyball, apartment renters in the area can find nine different city parks featuring landscaped open spaces, walking trails and sports courts. Local waterways and the Percy Priest Lake are also perfect locations for outdoor recreation. The lake spans 42 miles in length and encompasses 14,000 acres. You can experience a weekend away from the neighborhood and rent a boat from one of the marinas. Take in the view or go fishing for bass, catfish or trout as you enjoy the unencumbered tranquility of camping at one of the many developed areas.
The athletic complex in Smyrna provides the opportunity for participating in or watching a wide range of amateur sporting events. Professional sports fans can journey to Nashville and attend a Nashville Predators National Hockey League match or a Tennessee Titans National Football League game. The city also has the Fairgrounds Speedway, which regularly hosts NASCAR events.
U.S. State Highway 41 runs north and south through the community. Route 266 serves as a link between the highway and Interstate 24 that lies to the west. Although most residents drive, RTA buses and trains make stops in Smyrna for apartment renters commuting to work or school destinations outside the area. The Smyrna/Rutherford County airport offers chartered flight services when needed.
You can rent an apartment in the neighborhood and attend a higher education institution through the local learning center, which serves as a link with Motlow College based in Lynchburg. Middle State Tennessee University in nearby Murfreesboro provides students with the chance to earn undergraduate or graduate degrees. Belmont University in Nashville is a Christian facility that offers courses in 80 different fields of study. The institution also has two dozen master's degree programs and five doctoral programs.
Apartment renters may find positions with one of the major employers in the town that encompass automotive manufacturing, communications and personal care products. The predominant employers include Nissan, Asurion and Vi-Jon.
