The prosperous community of Baytown is located within the Houston metro area. With lots to do, multiple highways nearby, and a warm climate, it's no wonder Baytown is such a fast-growing city with a thriving business center.
There are different housing options available across the city. Baytown apartments for rent can be found for those interested in rental properties.
Settlers first came to the area that is now Baytown in 1822. However, the city was not always one united community. The town of Goose Creek was designated early on in the development of the area. Years later, in the 1910s, the community of Pelly was formed. Shortly after that, East Baytown popped up nearby, but quickly changed its name to Baytown.
Oil, discovered in 1908, has become the area's major industry. Goose Creek's oil field started the first offshore drilling in Texas, and an enormous refinery was built in Baytown. Not only would the oil industry assist the country during World War II, it also helped fuel population growth, and new residents flocked to the area searching for jobs.
Residents of the three towns began a movement to combine all three communities into one after World War I. Even though Baytown originally opposed the idea, the three towns consolidated in 1947. The new Baytown was officially founded in January of 1948.
Baytown is now home to more than 73,000 residents. The large city has grown substantially since its beginnings as three separate small towns, and it embraces its past while looking forward to a bright future.
Baytown residents who wish to pursue a degree can attend Lee College, a local community college. Students can attend the school to obtain an associate degree, or choose to transfer credits to a four-year university. With a range of programs available, most students should be able to find a course of study to suit their unique interests.
Oil continues to be a large industry in Baytown, and the primary employer in the city is Exxon Mobil. Other organizations that employ large numbers of residents are Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Bayer, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company and Lee College.
Rental properties in Baytown have a range of monthly rents. Most residents looking for Baytown apartments can expect to pay between $800 and $1,000. The U.S. Census Bureau found that the median gross monthly rent in the city was $831.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area ranked first on the Forbes Cities with the Highest Income When Adjusted for Cost of Living list.
Because Baytown rarely experiences extremely cold weather or snow, it's easy to enjoy the great outdoors for much of the year here. Many residents like to head to the Baytown Nature Center, which allows residents to appreciate the area's natural beauty and wildlife. Fishing piers, walking paths, observation platforms and a playground will ensure visitors of all ages enjoy their trips to the center.
History lovers can take a short drive to enjoy a visit to the San Jacinto Battleground Historic Site, which is a national historic landmark. The site, which is more than 1,000 acres, allows visitors to experience American history and learn about the events that led to the battle for Texas independence from Mexico. With the battleground, a monument, a museum and a battleship, there is plenty for everyone to enjoy at this historically significant and educational site.
Baytown encourages residents to connect with others during community classes. With group fitness programs, sports lessons and dance classes, residents can stay in shape and meet their neighbors while participating in these frequently offered sessions.
