Known as the "Birthplace of Texas,", Deer Park's family oriented lifestyle and leisurely outlook on life are a few of the many reasons why so many Texans call it home. Conveniently located between the greater Houston area and the Gulf Coast, the easy access of Deer Park apartments for rent is among the many reasons why this Texas town is one of the fastest-growing communities in the state. According to information from City-Data, the city has seen a 12 percent jump in population from 2000 to 2010 and boasts a cost of living index that is nearly eight points below the national average.
Deer Park saw its beginnings in the late 1800s when an Illinois man named Simeon Henry West came into the area and aggressively pioneered the city. He gave the new development the name Deer Park due to the numerous deer that roamed the plains near the Gulf of Mexico. The city became well-known in the 1920s after Shell Oil Company broke ground with its discovery of oil in the area and the city began to grow rapidly, eventually incorporating in 1948. Today, the city boasts more than 14 major industries, numerous parks and recreational facilities, and is every bit the "Community of Opportunity" that West dreamed it would be more than 100 years ago. According to 2010 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the city is home to more than 32,000 residents.
The city is home to San Jacinto State Park, a significant area in Texas history, as its grounds saw the famous battle that won the Lone Star State its independence from Mexico in 1836. This historic site consists of a battleground monument and Battleship Texas, both great examples of this state's history, making it one of biggest historical attractions in the state.
