South Main Houston was home to one of the state's first civic associations in the late 1900's. The neighborhood continues to encourage a great deal of community development and support for community activities and initiatives.

The rent for an apartment in this community can range anywhere from $699 per month to $1600 per month depending on your lifestyle and what amenities are important to you. Mama'a Oven, Cliff's Grill and House of Pie, to name a few are popular areas to grab a bite to eat in this neighborhood. Family owned restaurants are central to the dining in South Main Houston. Although you will find a few chain owned restaurants, most locals eat at their favorite "mom and pop" shops. As far as entertainment is concerned, there is never a dull moment. Places like the Red River Ice House provide all the entertainment you can enjoy for one night. Be sure to check out NRG stadium as well during one of the major events.
While there are community parks that provide a few areas of green space, the community is still working towards more environmentally conscious initiatives. Therefore, South Main would be a mediocre area for your pet but not necessarily the greatest place. Now, if you have family coming in from out of town to visit, they will be happy to know that some hotels in the area are cat and dog friendly and will allow them to bring their pet along at no additional cost. If you do decide to bring your pet to your new home you will be comforted in knowing that there are four major veterinarian clinics and hospitals in the area to take care of their needs.
The transportation in South Main like any other neighborhood in Texas is not an issue. The state recognizes that it has one of the larger populations in the country and therefore, honors this with adequate public transportation options for all. Over half of the population in South Main rely on using public transportation for their daily commute. From METROtrail, to Greyhound, you name it and its probably here in South Main to get you to your destination within the community and outside the community to other neighborhoods.
South Main has seven schools in the area divided among elementary, middle school and high school. Most Texas school districts use the terminology of being an "Independent School District." A few of the schools in South Main specialize in specific curriculum to fit the student's interest such as the Harmony Arts and Technology school. Three schools out of the seven are consistently ranked high for their academic standards and excellence in the classroom teaching style. The community places a high emphasis on education and encourages its students to pursue higher education after graduation.
