Living in Pflugerville, TX

William Bohls founded Pflugerville in 1860 by building a general store and post office at this location just north of Austin. The town was named after Henry Pfluger who purchased the first land in the area ten years earlier after fleeing Germany to escape the Prussian War. The first Pflugerville residents were farmers who grew corn, wheat, rye, beans, sweet potatoes, sugar cane and cattle to sell in markets on the Chisholm Trail. Pflugerville experienced rapid growth when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was brought to the area in 1904. The town prospered until the Great Depression led many residents to relocate to larger cities to find work, despite the busy cotton gins and ice factory in town. Today, Pflugerville is once again a progressive community with a growing population. Local residents celebrate Texas' rich history and culture with a new commitment to sustainability - Pflugerville is home to one of the largest solar farms in the United States.
