Sandy is tucked along the banks of the Wasatch Mountains, about 13 miles away from Salt Lake City. The community is an ideal spot for anyone interested in outdoor recreation. Sandy apartments for rent are as diverse as the community. Sandy is constantly going through development with new apartment complexes and businesses. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Sandy today is around 89,200 residents.
Sandy was first found by nomadic tribes such as Paiute, Shoshone and Bannock Indians who lived on the base of mountains as they traveled between Utah Lake and Bear Lake. The first settlers in the area moved to Sandy during the 1860s and 1870s because the land was far less crowded in the southern region of the Salt Lake Valley. Originally, the community only spanned one square mile and ran along the eastern edge of the Jordan River.
Farmers came to the area to test out the land that was considered very rich, stretching from downtown Salt Lake City to Point of the Mountain. However, it wasn't the farming industry that attracted many to the area, but instead the mining possibilities shaped the community of Sandy. Similarly, the railroad played a significant role in the thriving community because it allowed locals to transport their goods. In 1890, the mines began to fail and the community turned to agriculture. By 1893, Sandy was incorporated.
In the lake 1960s, the rural town boomed with new neighborhood developments and pocket communities. For many years, Sandy was simply a bedroom community for Salt Lake City, but residents and officials have continually made strides to turn it into a thriving community of its own.
There are several opportunities for employment in Sandy, as well as in neighboring Salt Lake City. In the community, the top employers include Alta View Hospital, Becton Dickinson/Deseret Medical, Shopko, Wasatch Building Products, Inc., Western Rehabilitation Institute, Discover Card and the South Towne Mall.
