Newport News has won the "100 Best Communities for Young People" award from America's Promise Alliance multiple times - most recently in 2012. Home to a number of sports franchises, thirty-two parks, and an abundance of art and history museums, Newport News is recognized for offering its community an array of programs and resources. Renting an apartment here means that you, too, get to be a part of all of the fun.
Newport News has a vibrant history beginning in the 17th century, shortly after English settlers founded the Jamestown colony. At the time, it was included in one of the four huge corporations of the Virginia Company of London. During the American Civil War, the community was comprised of a rural section of plantation. The city was not officially incorporated until 1958.
Now, 56 years later, Newport News' population surpasses 183,000, and residents renting apartments here will appreciate the multitude of activities available that cater to a wide variety of interests.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the city's thirty-two parks. Golfers can practice their swing at the Newport News Park, where there are also opportunities to bike, camp, and practice archery. In the summer, temperatures are usually in the 80's, making it the perfect excuse to head to Burwell Bay, and the crisp weather in the fall will be the ideal time to hike along one of the many trails near James River.
The city's historical richness lends itself to some fascinating sites and relics. Check out the American Civil War battle sites near Lee Hall. If you take a drive to nearby Yorktown and Williamsburg, you will also find many of the sites that were significant in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and you're looking for a more comprehensive understanding of American military history, check out the Virginia War Museum.
Fans of art and theatre will want to check out the Ferguson Center for the Arts and the Peninsula Fine Arts Center.
High school sports are a big part of the community life here in Newport News, but if you are looking to attend collegiate athletic events, check out what events are happening at the number of nearby schools, including the College of William and Mary, Hampton University, and Norfolk State University, among others.
