The Roanoke County city of Salem lies in the Virginia Shenandoah Valley nestled between the scenic Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountain ranges. You will find the community 104 miles from Greensboro, North Carolina, 120 miles from Charlottesville, and 250 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee. The natural beauty and diversification of the landscape provides a wealth of outdoor activities. The town also has a vested interest in athletics and has become known as "Virginia's Championship City." By moving here, apartment renters find the chance to enjoy small-town charm close to big city attractions.
Archaeological investigations revealed that Native Americans resided in the Salem area dating back to 8,000 B.C. In 1671, Robert Fallam and Thomas Batts became the first Europeans to arrive. They encountered the village created by the Totero people. The location was originally named Totero Town in commemoration of the Native Americans. However, the first settlement was named Fort Lewis for General Andrew Lewis. The settlement grew and provided services to visitors journeying along what is now U.S. Highway 11 and Interstate 81. The community was officially founded in 1802 and adopted the name of Salem. Currently, the town boasts a population of more than 24,800.
While looking for an apartment to rent in a local neighborhood, you should invest some time and explore the town. The Salem Museum is one of the historical points of interest where you will find a collection of Native American artifact, Civil War relics and an explanation of Salem's heritage. The Dixie Caverns and Pottery Shop provides a chance to see the creations of local artists and the opportunity to explore the only known cave system in the southern part of the state. Beer lovers venture to the Parkway Brewing Company. The facility offers tours, has a tasting room and regularly features a live band and food.
If your interests lie in the neighborhood of athletics, you will find options for the participant and spectator alike. The Hanging Rock Golf Club features an 18-hole course along with a pro-shop that provides equipment for rent, a driving range, practice area and grill areas. Apartment renters who are also baseball fans can attend Salem Red Sox games at the Lewis Gale Field. The minor league organization is affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. The community also hosts the NCAA Division III Football Championship games, the NCAA Men's Division III Basketball Championships, the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships and the Women's NCAA Division II Softball Championships.
U.S. Highways 11, 311 and 419 run through the town and Interstate 81 passes along the northern border. Rent accommodations here and visit, work or play in other areas by getting a ticket at the local bus station where a number of transit companies regularly stop. Within the community, residents often make use of the local taxi company for transportation.
Three institutions of higher learning are available when apartment renters move into a neighborhood in hopes of furthering their education. Roanoke College offers undergraduate programs of study in fields spanning from accounting to world history. The American National University offers certificate and diploma programs along with undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of studies. ITT Technical Institute provides students with the chance to earn undergraduate degrees in many different areas or a master's degree in business administration.
The major employers in town involve the government, health care and community public service jobs. Employers include the public school system, the local Veterans Health Care facility and the local parks and recreation department.
