Overview of Centralia

Conveniently located between the big cities of Seattle and Portland in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, the city of Centralia is one of the fastest-growing small towns in the region. Due to the numerous outdoor activities near the roaring Chehalis and Skookumchuck Rivers and cozy small-town atmosphere, it is no wonder that many Washington residents are taking a second look at Centralia apartments for rent. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly a quarter of the population is 18 or younger, making this community a popular place to raise a family.

Living in Centralia, WA

The history of Centralia is truly unique. Founded in 1875, Centralia was originally discovered by the son of a black slave who came west to escape discrimination. George Washington Bush journeyed into the lands of the Pacific Northwest to find a new life from his unfortunate experiences living in bondage in the years before the Civil War. After being barred from owning land in Oregon, he journeyed north to the unclaimed lands in what soon would be called Washington. After the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line through the area, Washington realized the potential for a city and plotted a town originally called Centerville, but later changed to Centralia. Although the city has seen its shares of ups and downs, the town has flourished into the largest city in Lewis County today.

Centralia Attractions and Special Events

One of the places that the community takes great pride in besides its historic downtown district is the Seminary Hill Natural Area located within the city. A large urban natural area overlooking the Chehalis and Skookumchuck River valleys, this natural oasis in the heart of city has been giving Centralia residents a reason to enjoy nature since the 1980s. With plenty of open space, hiking trails, and picnic areas, this is the perfect place to take the kids for a barbecue or simply adventure into the park's many trails, woods, and vistas.
