Located 32 miles northeast of beautiful Walla Walla, Dayton, Wash., is a gem of the Palouse Hills area that appeals to outdoor enthusiasts, families and singles looking for a slower pace of life. Unlike western Washington, Dayton experiences a full four seasons, with cold snowy winters and steamy summers providing the perfect atmosphere for the region's plethora of skiing, hiking and biking opportunities. Due to Dayton's location near the heart of the state's agricultural region, residents can enjoy local produce (and vino) year-round. Although this town is home to a mere 2,500 people, you'll never feel like living here is second to anything! Take a look at Dayton apartments for rent today to discover a new way of living.
Although Dayton was not a spot Lewis and Clark hit on their way to the Pacific Coast, the explorer duo did camp along Patit Creek on their way back east in 1806. Due to the area's fertile soils, Dayton was originally settled for its agricultural opportunities, and was eventually platted in 1872.
Today, Dayton acts as the county seat of Columbia County and provides a number of government employment opportunities to area residents. Agriculture still reigns king in terms of employment, with wheat, asparagus and green peas being a few of the area's largest crops. In recent years, harnessing wind energy has become an increasingly large field of work.
Dayton is also close to Whitman College, often considered the most rigorous private university in the state, and Walla Walla University.
Most Dayton residents say that Umatilla National Forest is a favorite natural playground. Spanning 1.4 million acres, the Umatilla encompasses a bevy of narrow ridges and plateaus, beautiful grasslands and dynamic valleys and peaks. With elevations ranging between 1,600 and 8,000 feet, even the most experienced hikers are sure to find more than a few challenging trails.
In town, residents can dine at the only four-star restaurant in Washington that's west of the Cascade Mountains, Patit Creek, or take a day to explore the variety of antique shops and museums, such as the Dayton Historical Depot Museum.
