Overview of Longview

Located along the Washington/Oregon state line, Longview is a city of approximately 36,600 people. Located in southwestern Washington, Longview provides easy access to the city of Vancouver (approximately 40 miles away) and Portland, Oreg., which is only 49 miles south, providing residents with a number of employment and educational opportunities. Located along the Cowlitz and Columbia rivers and only an hour west of Mt. St. Helens, residents of Longview are blessed with a variety of outdoor recreation options as well.

Living in Longview, WA

Longview was one of Washington state's first planned communities, and was funded largely by the lumber baron Robert Alexander Long. Due to the area's rich timber options, the Long-Bell Lumber Company in town became the world's largest lumber mill in the world a mere four months after it opened.

Today, timber continues to play a large part in Longview's economy, with Weyerhauser being one of Cowlitz County's top employers. Job opportunities are also widely available at St. Johns Medical Center and Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging, Inc., which produces cardboard, paper bags and paper.

While most residents of Longview apartments have personal vehicles, the Community Urban Bus Service, or CUBS, serves Longview, as well as most of Cowlitz County, so public transportation options are available if needed.

Longview Attractions and Special Events

One of the area's best attractions is Mt. St. Helens. This volcano is most famous for its 1980 eruption, but today, the mountain has returned to much of its former natural glory: hillsides are covered in thick evergreen forests and wildflowers, and fauna like deer, black bear and bald eagles. While here, Longview residents and Washington state visitors can explore the history of the eruption as well as go on hikes to the main crater.

In town, residents can enjoy watching local squirrels use the Nutty Narrows Bridge, a 60 foot suspension bridge that is heralded as the "World's Narrowest Bridge."
