Pullman goes by the slogan of "high tech, higher education, highest quality of life," which refers to the city's status as a college town and home of Washington State University. Located in Whitman County but only 30 minutes north of Lewiston, Idaho, and 90 minutes south of Spokane, Pullman is at once isolated and close to larger metropolitan areas. Though it used to be solely an agricultural area, it is now a center of culture, performing arts, PAC 12 sports and outdoor recreation. If you want to live in beautiful Eastern Washington but still have access to the sports and culture more often associated with the west side, renting an apartment in Pullman is a great way to experience rural living while still having the benefits of a bigger city.
Pullman was historically an agricultural town, described by early settlers in the late 1800s as not having a tree in sight. It was incorporated in 1888 as a town of just 200, and Washington State University was founded in 1890. The city is divided into almost four equal quarters as it sprawls over four big hills. These hills are Military, Pioneer, Sunnyside and College. WSU is situated on College Hill.
The population remains small with a 2013 census estimate of 31,395 people as compared to Spokane, which has a population over 200,000. Pullman retains its small town feel despite being the biggest city in Whitman County. This college town embraces a diverse and international student population along with its apartment renters.
Apartment renters who love the outdoors will love living in this Whitman County neighborhood with its many bike trails, gardens and parks. Nearby WSU has an 18-hole golf course, and boating, fishing and other water activities are available along Snake River. Hunting for upland birds, deer and waterfowl is also available. Fans of the arts will also have no problem fitting in with the neighborhood. WSU operates the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum, which features both sports and entertainment. There is also a Discovery Science Center, a public library, a movie theater, a civic theater and more.
Sports fans can enjoy the excitement of PAC 12 sports nearly year-round with WSU Cougars football, basketball, baseball and more. WSU sports are available right in town, but a short trip to Seattle and Washington's west side will also allow you to watch professional league sports with the Seattle Seahawks, Sounders, Storm and Mariners.
A car is the best way to navigate the Whitman County neighborhoods, but there is a transit system run by Pullman City Transit for getting around town, and it's considered among the best in the country for the size of town. The Wheatland Express transit company provides service out of the area and over to Spokane Airport by bus. You can also rent a car for reasonable rates.
If you are renting in Pullman and looking to go back to school, Washington State University is the biggest and closest college in town.
Apartment renters will find the top employers for the city in the service, retail and manufacturing sectors, with a growing technology segment. The top companies include Washington State University, the city government and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.
