Spanning 4.5 square miles in northern Milwaukee County, Brown Deer is bound by the village of River Hills to the east, Mequon to the north and Milwaukee to the south and west. Brown Deer is considered to be one of the North Shore communities because of its location. State Highway 100, or Brown Deer Road, cuts through the village connecting thriving suburbs of the North Shore to retail complexes in Brown Deer and the northwest suburbs of Milwaukee.
There are plenty of recreational facilities in Brown Deer such as Brown Deer Pond, which is a one-acre chlorinated swimming facility that children and adults love during the summer. Fair Chasm Park is another facility that sits on seven acres and boasts a shelter and grill area, horseshoe court, volleyball court and children's play area.
Brown Deer apartments for rent are ideal for anyone wishing to be near all the action of downtown Milwaukee without being right in the middle of it. The quaint town is a great place to raise a family, retire to, or spend quiet evenings after a long day at work. According to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the population has been steady in Brown Deer, and today more than 12,000 people call the village home.
Brown Deer is thought to have been first settled by the Yankees who moved there in search of rich farmlands. The area was ideal because it lies on the mouth of the Milwaukee River and the thickly wooded lands attracted men eager to build homes and grow crops. Also, since it was so close to the growing city of Milwaukee, farmers were able to ship their products to the city.
In 1835, the first settlers began to settle in the surrounding areas. By 1841, the towns of Lake and Milwaukee were divided up into seven townships that were roughly 36 square miles each. In the northeast corner was a small development called Brown Deer. By 1910, the town had 10 churches, schools and gravel roads. In 1951, Brown Deer was the home to Badger Meter Manufacturing Company. This sparked the move to incorporation in 1953, and the township was currently 1.8 square miles. However, town officials had to jump a few hurdles to make the incorporation happen, and it finally did on January 20, 1955.
Although many residents travel to Milwaukee for employment, Brown Deer's manufacturing industry is very prosperous. Some of the major employers of the area include Rite-Hite Corp., Applied Control Concepts, Great Lakes Friction Products and Badger Meter.
Similarly, many students living in Brown Deer apartments travel downtown to go to school at Milwaukee Area Technical College, Marquette University, Mount Mary College, Medical College of Wisconsin or Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Living in Brown Deer is fairly inexpensive considering the quaint community and close proximity to downtown Milwaukee.
