Overview of Monroe

Located in Green County, Monroe is a Wisconsin town that serves as the seat for the county. Often called the Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA, the town is home to some of the world's top cheese producers and has an active and thriving tourism industry due to the number of tourists flocking to the city for its cheeses. Apartment renters can find places to rent in some of the town's historic neighborhoods and in its downtown district, which has dozens of historic buildings and is close to recreation trails.

Living in Monroe

The first settlers arrived in town during the 1830s and built homes nearby. William Russel, one of the early residents, helped form the town and set aside land for its first school. The town was also home to a normal school, or a school to prepare teachers, which later became a state teachers college. Its current success relies on the cheese manufacturers and companies that later moved into the city.

As new businesses arrived, the city added more homes and apartments for rent and purchase to meet the demand of new residents. The current population of the city is just under 11,000 people.

One of the more popular attractions in Monroe is the Minhas Craft Brewery. The local brewery, which hires a number of local residents, makes its own beers and offers tours.

Apartment renters who love the great outdoors will find ample things to do in Monroe. The city boasts a number of parks near top neighborhoods that offer different seasonal activities. Twining Park has a small stage where local bands and regional artists perform throughout the year. The town is also home to a skate park and a swimming pool that opens in the late spring.

When you want to get up and get active, check out the Badger State Trail. You can walk or bike the long trail in the warmer months and head off on a recreational vehicle in the winter. Also nearby is the Cheese County Trail that covers more than 40 miles. This trail takes you by some of the top cheese producers and gives you an inside look at how companies use ingredients from local farmers to make different dairy products.

If you like touring local businesses, you may want to stop by the Roth Kase Cheese Factory as well. This is one of the oldest cheese factories in the region and provides locals with tours of its production facility. You may even get the chance to sample some of its top products before leaving.

Monroe is small enough that it does not have its own public transportation system. There are four major state highways that run through town or around town. Locals typically drive their own vehicles and use those highways to go from downtown and other parts of the city to towns across the state.
